It is one of the most emotional and horrible places in Lviv, which is definitely a must to see. The exposition is located in the premises that were formerly used for the Austro-Hungarian gendarmerie, the Polish political police, the NKVD (People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs in the Soviet Union) prison and the Militsiia (the name of the police forces in the Soviet Union).
During the Soviet occupation there was a transfer camp, where in 1941, after the beginning of the German-Soviet War, workers of NKVD tortured about a thousand prisoners as they didn’t want to evacuate them. The head of this repressive terror in Western Ukraine was Ivan Serheiev - the NKVD / MGB (Ministry for State Security in the Soviet Union) executioner, who later participated in crushing of the popular uprising in Hungary (1956) and Prague (1968).
Today, the museum is also an academic organization that works with the former KGB (Committee for State Security in the Soviet Union) archives and rehabilitates the fighters for the freedom of Ukraine.
