Hlyniany Gate is a reconstructed monument of the defensive system, that protected the city from enemies in the Middle Ages.

The tower received its name from the city located near Lviv – Hlyniany. According to the privilege of the Polish kings, it was the last frontier for merchants coming from other cities in order not to hinder the trade in Lviv. The gate belonged to the defensive system of the Bernardine monastery.

It was constructed for the first time in 15th century. Afterwards a lift bridge was constructed in front of the building and a moat filled with water was made as an additional element of defense.

In case of war, the shop of Lviv cobblers had to take charge of its support and defense. The majority of defensive buildings of the city were destroyed during the Austro-Hungarian rule, so the modern look of the gate is a historic reconstruction that was accomplished in 1967-1977.
