Tustan is one of those fortresses that had to protect the borders of the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia, and at the same time a place where merchants, who were moving via Galicia, had to stop and pay a fee.
The first mention of the fortress dates back to the 18th century. In the rocks it is still possible to find the remains of more than 4000 grooves and slots used for the installation of wooden elements of the fortress.
Despite numerous attacks and damages, the new defenders were able to rebuild it. In 1994, the State Historical and Cultural Reserve was created on its base. Nearby is a museumthat provides insight into the history of the fortress and shows the models reproducing its appearance. Nowadays Tustan is a popular place for rest and knight tournaments (August-September).
