It is very difficult to overestimate the role of Metropolitan Andrei for Ukrainians. He lived during the challenging time: the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the liberation struggle of Ukrainians at the beginning of the Second World War.

Despite all the troubles, Count Andrei Sheptytskyi embodied step by step his slogan - to build Ukraine "with a quiet, tireless work". He initiated the process of collecting various monuments of folk art.

All these exhibits formed the basis of the present museum. At the beginning of the 20th century, he bequeathed this collection and the building specially purchased for it to the Ukrainian people. The museum has several branches. One of the best expositions of the Ukrainian icon of the 13th-18th centuries in the world is located on a permanent basis in the building at 20 Svobody Avenue.
